Shake it all about

Every now and then you have a weekend that stands out from the rest. This last weekend was one of those for me.

On Thursday I got to watch the handsome Yo Grapes preform for the first time in ages and on Saturday I got to ‘rage’ to Desmond and their new songs. While I’m on the topic Matthew Mole made an appearance and he has some new songs too, they are pretty flipping rad, I can’t wait to hear the rest.

In between dancing my face off I learnt two things:

1. Lil Bow is one of my favourite South African DJs, seriously her set is so much fun.

2. Trying to make a video is really hard, but I hope to get better at it really soon.

You can watch my silly little video below and check out my way better photos after that. Hope you also had a great weekend!

The Sheds @1Fox

What happens when two people who love Joburg find a block of empty warehouses in Joburg? The Sheds @1Fox thats what. 1 Fox is the lovechild of Gerald Garner (my hero) and Jan Roode and will develop into a hub of restaurants, shops, offices and venues over the next few years.

For some time now I’ve been walking past The Sheds and watching them develop from a set of derelict empty warehouses to what I believe is fast become Joburg’s favourite market…and it’s only been open for a week.

So what makes The Sheds different from any other typical Joburg market? Well for one you could fit Arts on Main and Neighbourgoods into a corner of The Sheds, it’s huge, which means no shoving and no getting someones hair in your hollandaise sauce as you try to squeeze past in search of a table. Oh yes, that’s another thing there are so many tables to pick from you will never be left holding your newly made waffle awkwardly as you try to eat it standing up.

The market will also eventually be open everyday of the week, delicious shopping and food everyday of the week, yum! Although there is a lovely bar section to the market the overall vibe seems more family orientated and a little more relaxed than some of it’s counterparts.

For now you can visit The Sheds@1Fox every Thursday to Sunday, trading from 10:00 – 18:00.

I love how the original look and feel of the original warehouse has been kept.

A liquor license was granted for the Ferreira’s Bar on this site in 1893 and for the Good Luck Bar in 1895. One can only speculate that Charles Glass himself peddled his original Castle Larger here.

We got a sneak peak of the undeveloped side of The Sheds, I can’t wait to see what it looks like in a few years time.

Catch a tan – Anaïs Boileau

It’s summer FINALLY, and although I’m sure we may still have a few nippy days left before we launch head first into sun-filled fun-filled December holidays it’s time to start working on our tans.

Anaïs Boileau has taken a few beautiful portraits of a few women that, simply put, live for the tan. Have fun and use sunscreen!

Hi, Bye Beneco

The first time I heard Bye Beneco was at wolves, and it sucked because the crowd kept talking over them. The second time I heard Bye Beneco was on Soundcloud and that didn’t suck one bit.

If you haven’t heard BB before I suggest listening to this song while you read the rest of the post.

The band is made up of four wonderful humans, all of who look like they’ve just stepped off the Further:

Lenny-Dee on lead vocals, keys, and guitar.

porcelain
Jenny on vocals, keys, and percussion.

jenny black hair
Bergen on drums and guitar.

bergen b&w
Matthew on guitar and drums.

matthew eyes b&W

Their name comes from a surreal place where the unconscious mind meets reality…see I told you they had Ken Kesey written all over them.

When the band heard that Crystal Fighters, MGMT and The Presets were coming to South Africa they figured that their sound would be amazing as an opening act, hands up if you agree.

If you want to year more Bye Beneco goodness vote for them to Open The City by SMSing “BYE BENECO” to 48477 or vote here.

I’m also giving away tickets to VITC so head on over to my Facebook Page or Instagram account to enter!

B-ball with Ting Chong

Daniel Ting Chong is without a doubt one of South Africa’s most talented designers, he also happens to be my favourite designer of all time. Recently Mr Ting Chong designed a poster celebrating the wonderful sport of Basketball, I can just imagine Craig loving this, check it out!

Please stand up for Alessandro Ripane

Sometimes I think I’m going to end up like one of those crazy old ladies on hoarders, how do you know when you have too much art and beautiful things in your house?

Alessandro Ripane was born in Genoa (Italy, but he’s lived and worked for a period in Sweden) exactly in the middle of 1989.
Due to the lack of wild animals in the city of Genoa, Alessandro bought a lot of books about it.
Due to the lack of superheroes in the city of Genoa, Alessandro bought a lot of comics about it.
Needless to say, soon became an expert in both categories, even if now draw a little bit of everything, except the aliens, because it is not sure how they are dressed.

Now he’s engaged to fight the fall of his hair, to compose sophisticated music of the future, to learn how to draw aliens and watch a lot of movies about monsters and zombies that he has not seen yet.

I feel like his illustrations would make a beautifully weird wallpaper don’t you?
