The Sheds @1Fox

What happens when two people who love Joburg find a block of empty warehouses in Joburg? The Sheds @1Fox thats what. 1 Fox is the lovechild of Gerald Garner (my hero) and Jan Roode and will develop into a hub of restaurants, shops, offices and venues over the next few years.

For some time now I’ve been walking past The Sheds and watching them develop from a set of derelict empty warehouses to what I believe is fast become Joburg’s favourite market…and it’s only been open for a week.

So what makes The Sheds different from any other typical Joburg market? Well for one you could fit Arts on Main and Neighbourgoods into a corner of The Sheds, it’s huge, which means no shoving and no getting someones hair in your hollandaise sauce as you try to squeeze past in search of a table. Oh yes, that’s another thing there are so many tables to pick from you will never be left holding your newly made waffle awkwardly as you try to eat it standing up.

The market will also eventually be open everyday of the week, delicious shopping and food everyday of the week, yum! Although there is a lovely bar section to the market the overall vibe seems more family orientated and a little more relaxed than some of it’s counterparts.

For now you can visit The Sheds@1Fox every Thursday to Sunday, trading from 10:00 – 18:00.

I love how the original look and feel of the original warehouse has been kept.

A liquor license was granted for the Ferreira’s Bar on this site in 1893 and for the Good Luck Bar in 1895. One can only speculate that Charles Glass himself peddled his original Castle Larger here.

We got a sneak peak of the undeveloped side of The Sheds, I can’t wait to see what it looks like in a few years time.

#SheSaidWalks

Yesterday I was sitting with Craig and he asked me what I would do if I could do anything, I said I would become a tour guide in Johannesburg and write a travel guide to the city. While I won’t be giving up everything to become an author (just yet), I am lucky enough to give walking tours of the city every once in a while.

If you are still a little uncertain about discovering Joburg on your own, my walks are a great way to take Joburg in. We will walk through Newtown, the original China Town, Ferreirasdorp, Ghandi Square, the Mining District and sooooo much more.

Here’s a pretty rad review of my tour if you need more convincing.

The next walk will be on September 13th and will again be R100 per person, meeting at 8AM outside Post at 70 Juta Street Braamfontein. To book your spot please email me – shesaidsa@gmail.com . I also do private tours so feel free to mail me if you can’t make the set date.

On the last walk the incredibly talented Nicole Olwagen from Beyond the Clouds Photography took some pictures which she was kind enough to let me use.

Fat Girl Slim

A few years ago I stopped going for oil massages because I was fed up with the masseuses not ‘pushing’ hard enough. When I go for a massage I like to feel he stress literally being massaged out of my body. So for years I’ve been going for oil free massages presumably inspired by the traditional Thai way of massaging.

Last week however I was offered a chance to experience a massage from Fat Girl Slim, which to be honest I agreed to because that is the single coolest name for a salon…EVER.

Situated across the road from Jolly Roger in Parkhurst (don’t worry it’s a world away from cheap pizza and beer drinking students) Fat Girl Slim is like a little escape from the bustling streets of Parkhurst. I was introduced to Tumi the slightest most unassuming lady, with the strongest hands I have ever felt. Seriously I don’t think I will ever have another knot in my back again.

The beautiful Tumi

Fat Girl Slim is owned by Rosheen Kriegler and Wendy Luhabe who I kinda feel like I would hug if I ever got to meet them for creating this little piece of heaven. The Salon is also one of only five exclusive Clarins salons in Johannesburg area. Rosheen and Wendy both recommend the Clarins Facials with Tumi and the Hot Stone Pedi with Sipho.

86 Public

It sounds like a line out of a Warren Buffet book, “Stick to what you know and do it well,” and while it might not always be true when it comes to one of my new favourite pizzerias it’s definitely true.

86 Public, has stuck to making delicious pizzas and delicious pizzas only. If  you are hunkering for nice steak or even a salad 86 Public is not for you, but if you feel like a delicious gourmet slice head on over.

Although 86 Public has been open for around a year now it’s recently added live music and cocktails to its list of offerings which makes for amazing Saturday afternoons spent in the sun.

This Saturday I headed out with my friends Tarryn and Sam to have a pizza and try as many cocktails as possible.

Visit 86 Public 7 days a week. CNR Juta & Melle Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg, Gauteng
