Shake it all about

Every now and then you have a weekend that stands out from the rest. This last weekend was one of those for me.

On Thursday I got to watch the handsome Yo Grapes preform for the first time in ages and on Saturday I got to ‘rage’ to Desmond and their new songs. While I’m on the topic Matthew Mole made an appearance and he has some new songs too, they are pretty flipping rad, I can’t wait to hear the rest.

In between dancing my face off I learnt two things:

1. Lil Bow is one of my favourite South African DJs, seriously her set is so much fun.

2. Trying to make a video is really hard, but I hope to get better at it really soon.

You can watch my silly little video below and check out my way better photos after that. Hope you also had a great weekend!

Desmond and the Tutus – Enjoy Yourself

Evita Bezuidenhout, Nataniël and Kurt Darren are without a doubt some of South Africa’s best performers…but they ain’t got shit on Desmond and the Flipping Tutus.

Desmond’s music has always been great but their new songs have had me dancing around and possibly causing a few accidents on the way to work. They boys have been hard at work for what seems like an age and will be releasing their album in three parts, you can order it off iTunes here.

Desmond has also been working hard at coming up with some pretty crazy short videos to promote their album…on this one they go on a camping trip.

So proud of you guys and your old faces!

#pumahappyholiday

Hi there…I’m back.

If there was a blogging hell I would go to it for being so terrible at updating mine for the past month. I do however have a really good excuse…I promise. Holiday! I’ve been on holiday.

This year I was fortunate to join the Puma Happy Holiday Tour with Desmond and a bunch of really awesome bands including Shortstraw, my new favourite Beach Party and all-time favourite Gateway Drugs and a bunch of other super awesome people!

There’s one more date left on the Joburg leg of the tour this Friday at Rumours so pull on in!

Hit Girl for Halloween

When I was younger Halloween was never really a big thing in South Africa, over the past few years however it seems to be getting more and more popular and I’m not complaining because I flipping love dressing up.

This year I dressed up as Hit Girl from Kickass. If you wanna recreate the look it’s really simple and cheap. I got the wig at Scalliwags, which by the way is the best dress up shop in Joburg, the tights were from Mr Price and the cape was from Reggies. The corset was the most expensive part of the outfit but it’s something that you can definitely use over and over again, I picked it up from China Mall on the corner of Republic and Jan Smuts.

Desmond does Japan

So as you know I got back from Japan a whole two weeks ago now…time has flown by sho! I hope no one is getting sick of my Japan posts just yet, I so badly want to share as much of it with you as I can, it really is the most wonderful place.

My whole reason for going to Japan in particular was because my wonderful boyfriend Craig and his band were touring Japan promoting their new album, they had been there once a few years before so I think they were all pretty excited to go back.

It was so awesome to see and meet some of the bands, by far my favourite out of all the bands we got to see was Sawagi, I’ve posted one of their videos below! We also got to watch our friend Ucary play a show with her band Ucary and The Valentine. She’s super talented and super sweet and took us out a few times and showed us around Tokyo. Another band I really enjoyed was 8otto, their lead singer has the craziest afro and he pays the drums and sings at the same time, which is pretty impressive, I thought about asking if i could touch his fro but I’m not sure if that would have gone down too well!

Here are a few photos from the last Desmond’s show in Tokyo…it involved a lot of  saké!

It’s Matthew Mole!

Matthew Mole, one man band, loves Yo Grapes and Desmond and the Tutus, would be Darth Vader if he could and is not a drummer.

Matthew Mole is easily one of my favourite South African artists, if you haven’t heard of this guy you really need to sit down and take a moment to listen to his music. It’s the flipping best plus he’s the nicest guy.

His music is a mix of electric, indie and folk…foldie… if that’s not a genre it sure should be.  Matthew won the Converse Get Out of the Garage competition last year but had been making waves way before that, inspired by his Dad he started playing and singing, thank you Mr Dad of Matthew, we owe you big time!

He was recently signed by Just Music and his album titled The Home We Built is set to be released in May this year. “Just Music is putting a lot into this album, its super encouraging. It’s sounding really nice, the whole process has been really new, finally getting to do this stuff in a studio,” says Matthew.

You can listen to some of his songs here, my favourites are Have I Told You and It’s Simple Child.

Oh when the Saints

Last night I got to hang out with Suburban Saints who have come to SA on their first international tour, not only can they down beers like it’s going out of fashion but they are also pretty funny. You can catch their first show in Joburg on Saturday at The Woods with Desmond. For a full list of their shows click here!  You can win tickets to the show, all you need to do is check out my FB page.

I can’t really describe their music but if I had to I would go with a mix of Brit Pop/ Indie Rock…but you should probably take a listen for yourself!

These are my two  fav songs of theirs

The guys all met while studying music production at University in Aberdeen  and in true Indie style don’t care much for money and would love to quit their day jobs and just play music and hang out with each other and of course  pick on David..  They are super excited to be in SA so let’s show them a good time!
