The Sheds @1Fox

What happens when two people who love Joburg find a block of empty warehouses in Joburg? The Sheds @1Fox thats what. 1 Fox is the lovechild of Gerald Garner (my hero) and Jan Roode and will develop into a hub of restaurants, shops, offices and venues over the next few years.

For some time now I’ve been walking past The Sheds and watching them develop from a set of derelict empty warehouses to what I believe is fast become Joburg’s favourite market…and it’s only been open for a week.

So what makes The Sheds different from any other typical Joburg market? Well for one you could fit Arts on Main and Neighbourgoods into a corner of The Sheds, it’s huge, which means no shoving and no getting someones hair in your hollandaise sauce as you try to squeeze past in search of a table. Oh yes, that’s another thing there are so many tables to pick from you will never be left holding your newly made waffle awkwardly as you try to eat it standing up.

The market will also eventually be open everyday of the week, delicious shopping and food everyday of the week, yum! Although there is a lovely bar section to the market the overall vibe seems more family orientated and a little more relaxed than some of it’s counterparts.

For now you can visit The Sheds@1Fox every Thursday to Sunday, trading from 10:00 – 18:00.

I love how the original look and feel of the original warehouse has been kept.

A liquor license was granted for the Ferreira’s Bar on this site in 1893 and for the Good Luck Bar in 1895. One can only speculate that Charles Glass himself peddled his original Castle Larger here.

31 Days of Instagram @lebolukewarm

lebo31

If Lebo was a character from Grease he would be Danny…he even has the leather jacket to fit the part. Meet @lebolukewarm by far one of South Africa’s coolest Instagrammers.

1. What is your handle?

@lebolukewarm

2. What do you do when you’re not Instagramming?

-I’m busy finding more things to Instagram, but for the most part I’m taking selfies and making music.

3. How did you discover Instagram?

Damn, I think it was when I saw a friend take a picture of their lunch and I was like; I need to get an iPhone for this very reason!

4. Who are some of your favourite SA Instagrammers?

– I don’t have any they all suck, kidding! @lulamawolf, @zenocide, @shesaidsa, @alessiolr, @ghostwitness, @alexioso and @btherad to name a few, oh and @hairyknees when he does decide to post!

5. Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to master the platform?

Consistency is key, always post good quality pics and tell a story of you have one, if not…try be unique.

6. Do you have a particular photographic style?

I love portraits, but I just recently fell in love with landscapes, I don’t think I have a particular style now.. All my ages are average.

7. Where is your favourite place to take pictures in Johannesburg?

I don’t really have one, I guess I just love taking pics with my friends from the @igerssouthafrica community, wherever the pictures take us really!

It is so difficult to get wifi this side it's crazy!! But the sites are so unbelievable.. The roads are long, high and wind all over the place.. People drive like they are late and hooting is a courteous thing (it apparently notifies the person in front that you are now here and are over taking..) I love travelling, it is nearly impossible for me to keep posting cause we never have signal.. Right now I'm sitting with @mayur_malusare and @jasmeetsingh139 in the manager's office, cause we told him we needed to contact our loved ones.. To see some of our travels check out the following hashtags: #instameetladakh #ig_ladakh14 Traveling with: @jasmeetsingh139 @kooljatt @dakumar @rujulbhatt @amitpanchasara @mayur_malusare @rupspanchasara @j_s_k_ #leboluketravels

Before the powers that be take away this beloved wifi,(the manager kicks us out of his office) I thought I should just leave you with this last image, I'm traveling and can never be sure of when I'll be online next.. Till then please be safe and love one another, oh yes don't forget to stay fresh and so clean… However before I go, I should let you know, in case you did not know (like I didn't when I got here) this is how you shower, with a bucket and you scoop the water out with a smaller jug to pour it all over yourself, the houses in India are fitted with a shower head, but not the conventional four walled shower as we know it.. So the water splashes everywhere in the bathroom and yes, I mean EVERYWHERE!!. Then after you're done you take a squeegee looking like device and clean the floor.. This guy kinda reminded me of kwa makhulu (my grand mother's place) pre 94' To see some of our travels check out the following hashtags: #instameetladakh #ig_ladakh14 Traveling with: @jasmeetsingh139 @kooljatt @dakumar @rujulbhatt @amitpanchasara @mayur_malusare @rupspanchasara @j_s_k_ #leboluketravels

Fat Girl Slim

A few years ago I stopped going for oil massages because I was fed up with the masseuses not ‘pushing’ hard enough. When I go for a massage I like to feel he stress literally being massaged out of my body. So for years I’ve been going for oil free massages presumably inspired by the traditional Thai way of massaging.

Last week however I was offered a chance to experience a massage from Fat Girl Slim, which to be honest I agreed to because that is the single coolest name for a salon…EVER.

Situated across the road from Jolly Roger in Parkhurst (don’t worry it’s a world away from cheap pizza and beer drinking students) Fat Girl Slim is like a little escape from the bustling streets of Parkhurst. I was introduced to Tumi the slightest most unassuming lady, with the strongest hands I have ever felt. Seriously I don’t think I will ever have another knot in my back again.

The beautiful Tumi

Fat Girl Slim is owned by Rosheen Kriegler and Wendy Luhabe who I kinda feel like I would hug if I ever got to meet them for creating this little piece of heaven. The Salon is also one of only five exclusive Clarins salons in Johannesburg area. Rosheen and Wendy both recommend the Clarins Facials with Tumi and the Hot Stone Pedi with Sipho.

86 Public

It sounds like a line out of a Warren Buffet book, “Stick to what you know and do it well,” and while it might not always be true when it comes to one of my new favourite pizzerias it’s definitely true.

86 Public, has stuck to making delicious pizzas and delicious pizzas only. If  you are hunkering for nice steak or even a salad 86 Public is not for you, but if you feel like a delicious gourmet slice head on over.

Although 86 Public has been open for around a year now it’s recently added live music and cocktails to its list of offerings which makes for amazing Saturday afternoons spent in the sun.

This Saturday I headed out with my friends Tarryn and Sam to have a pizza and try as many cocktails as possible.

Visit 86 Public 7 days a week. CNR Juta & Melle Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg, Gauteng

FieldCandy

Every year when festival season or Oppi season comes around there is a mad rush to see who can have the most exciting campsite.

I was looking into some tent ideas and I came across a company called FieldCandy who really should coin the term #TentPorn. Check out some of their awesome designs and do yourself a favour and order one, the even offer free worldwide shipping.

I really like the plain colours on some of their designs. They also have some really awesome collaborations which I plan on chatting about in another post.

#SeeYourCity: James Hall Transport Museum

Hi there!

If you missed the last instalment of #SeeYourCity you can learn all about Carlton Centre here

The next stop on the City Sightseeing Johannesburg Tour is the James Hall Transport Museum. It may not look like much from the outside but once you step inside you are guaranteed to be pleasantly surprised.

Having grown up in the South of Johannesburg the museum was a regular weekend outing for my family and I have fond memories of scaling old city busses and sitting in the driver seat of even older trams pretending to be a driver. Today the museum is still in fantastic nick and whats more is theres no entrance charge…patrons are however, encouraged to leave a donation.

IMG_7611 copy

IMG_7628 copy

The museum is split into 6 sections including:Animal-drawn vehicles 1870 – 1910
– Bicycles and motorcycles 1786 – 1960
– Buses and Coaches
– Fire engines and equipment 1877 – 1960
– Motor cars 1900 – 1980
– Steam-driven vehicles
– Trams and trolley buses 1896 – 1986

The museum is a must for all Joburgers and non-Joburgers alike, and each exhibit inside the museum is interesting and well looked-after and without a doubt a big winner amongst the kids.

Opening hours: The Museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 09:00 – 17:00.

On weekends the Museum will be closed during the hour of 12:00 – 13:00.

Weekend hours are therefore:
09:00 – 12:00
13:00 – 17:00

The Museum is closed on the following days:
Mondays
Christmas Day
Boxing Day
Good Friday
