The Sheds @1Fox

What happens when two people who love Joburg find a block of empty warehouses in Joburg? The Sheds @1Fox thats what. 1 Fox is the lovechild of Gerald Garner (my hero) and Jan Roode and will develop into a hub of restaurants, shops, offices and venues over the next few years.

For some time now I’ve been walking past The Sheds and watching them develop from a set of derelict empty warehouses to what I believe is fast become Joburg’s favourite market…and it’s only been open for a week.

So what makes The Sheds different from any other typical Joburg market? Well for one you could fit Arts on Main and Neighbourgoods into a corner of The Sheds, it’s huge, which means no shoving and no getting someones hair in your hollandaise sauce as you try to squeeze past in search of a table. Oh yes, that’s another thing there are so many tables to pick from you will never be left holding your newly made waffle awkwardly as you try to eat it standing up.

The market will also eventually be open everyday of the week, delicious shopping and food everyday of the week, yum! Although there is a lovely bar section to the market the overall vibe seems more family orientated and a little more relaxed than some of it’s counterparts.

For now you can visit The Sheds@1Fox every Thursday to Sunday, trading from 10:00 – 18:00.

I love how the original look and feel of the original warehouse has been kept.

A liquor license was granted for the Ferreira’s Bar on this site in 1893 and for the Good Luck Bar in 1895. One can only speculate that Charles Glass himself peddled his original Castle Larger here.

We got a sneak peak of the undeveloped side of The Sheds, I can’t wait to see what it looks like in a few years time.

31 Days of Instagram @zenoshoots

zeno final 31

Zeno Petersen is by far one of my favourite Instagrammers both locally and internationally, his pictures speak for themselves, each telling their own incredibly moving stories unique to South Africa.

1. What is your handle?

@zenocine

2. What do you do when you’re not Instagramming?

When I’m not Instagramming I’m what you call a cinematographer , DP / director of photography . Basically I shoot TV series/ TV dramas or music videos or commercials.

3. How did you discover Instagram?

I discovered Instagram a couple of years ago when I looked for a different platform to showcase my photography , my dream job as always been to be a professional photographer, and Instagram made it easy for me to experiment with a new kind of medium, mobile photography .  I’m so fascinated by it that I don’t shoot on normal stills cameras anymore.

4. Who are some of your favourite SA Instagrammers?

This is a difficult question to answer. I can name a couple but I feel like I discover new talent and amazing Instagramers everyday.

5. Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to master the platform?

How to master the platform …mmm , be yourself , find your voice , your way of telling a story that has been told a million times before , shoot from the heart . We all try to be unique and different , I don’t think you can master it . I haven’t mastered it yet , you can only try and show people your vision, your point of view.

6. Do you have a particular photographic style?

My style , well I love taking pictures of people . Portraits…and finding that moment, that expression that tells a story. Other then that I like to experiment with different apps.

7. Where is your favourite place to take pictures in Johannesburg?

My favourite place to shoot must be on set . When I’m at work with my film crew. So many faces, and everyone is willing to join in my crazy experiments.

Mama Mexicana

My first experience with Mexican food was when my lovely friend Fran from Texas in the US held a Mexican themed party, so it’s safe to say the bar for Mexican food was set extremely high and Mama Mexicana is well above it. Their food is so good in fact that I’ve been there twice since visiting it for the first time.

mama mex

Mama Mexicana has been around for about a year now and much like an old wine it’s getting better with age. In-between stuffing my face with chilli poppers (which are delicious by the way) I managed to talk to Kevin, one of the owners of the restaurant. Born in Taiwan Kevin worked in a Mexican restaurant with an American couple who taught him everything he knows, if I could find that couple I would hug them…hard!

We really had no idea what to order so we decided to order one of everything including: breakfast burritos, chilli poppers, corn bread, bacon nachos and chicken quesadillas. Everything was delicious but by far my favourite snack was the warm corn bread with sour cream.

You can find Mama Mexicana at 264 Fox Street just behind the Arts on Main complex. They are open from Tuesday to Sunday every week and even more exciting they are really well priced, for the four of our meals and two drinks each the bill came to jus under R400!

86 Public

It sounds like a line out of a Warren Buffet book, “Stick to what you know and do it well,” and while it might not always be true when it comes to one of my new favourite pizzerias it’s definitely true.

86 Public, has stuck to making delicious pizzas and delicious pizzas only. If  you are hunkering for nice steak or even a salad 86 Public is not for you, but if you feel like a delicious gourmet slice head on over.

Although 86 Public has been open for around a year now it’s recently added live music and cocktails to its list of offerings which makes for amazing Saturday afternoons spent in the sun.

This Saturday I headed out with my friends Tarryn and Sam to have a pizza and try as many cocktails as possible.

Visit 86 Public 7 days a week. CNR Juta & Melle Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg, Gauteng

Budget: R100 – R150

Tatsuro Kiuchi

Since travelling to Japan last year  I’ve been obsessed with the Japanese culture and the amazing artists influenced by it.

I recently discovered the work of Tatsuro Kiuchi

Tatsuro was born in Tokyo where he studied biology and later moved over to art where he excelled at illustrations for children’s books. I love almost every single one of his pieces but I picked a few of my favourites to share with you, I can just imagine one of his prints being turned into the most amazing wallpaper.

#MeetSouthAfrica Instawalk

In 2013 SA Tourism started the #MeetSouthAfrica campaign. The campaign brought bloggers from around the world to experience just how awesome South Africa is. This year the #MeetSouthAfrica campaign once again invited some of the world’s best travel bloggers to South Africa. On Saturday I was lucky enough to join the #MeetSouthAfrica Instawalk in Soweto meet a few of the bloggers and catchup with one of the organisers the amazing Heather Mason from 2Summers one of the best Joburg based blogs ever!

Here are some of my pics from the walk, follow the bloggers as the move around our beautiful country by checking out the #MeetSouthAfrica hashtag.

My three best friends

The sisterhood of the travelling pants doesn’t have shit on my friends and I. Seriously though we would even give Shakespeare’s epic love stories a run for their money. I’m lucky enough to constantly be surrounded by various wonderful and inspiring human beings on a daily basis but there are definitely three that stand out.

Tarry, Star and Sam.

Yesterday they were kind enough to get all dressed up and don some wreathes I made and stand around looking pretty while I took photos of them. Here are some of the pictures from our afternoon together at the Air force memorial in Centurion.
